Kolkata Runs, Reflects and Recharges Ahead of International Yoga Day

Thousands of residents across Kolkata participated in ‘Daud Se Dhyan 2026 – From Movement to Stillness’, a unique fitness and wellness initiative organised ahead of the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026, on June 19.

The event began with a marathon from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation headquarters to the historic Writers’ Building, followed by a yoga and meditation session that highlighted the connection between physical activity, mindfulness and holistic well-being.

The programme was flagged off by Union Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav and senior state leaders. Former tennis star Leander Paes joined the yoga session, drawing enthusiasm from participants and fitness enthusiasts.

A key feature of the initiative was a 2-km Yoga Run held simultaneously at 11 locations across the city, including Elliot Park, Tala Park, Subhas Sarobar, Golpark and Gitanjali Stadium. The run brought together citizens from diverse backgrounds, promoting yoga not just as an exercise but as a lifestyle practice.

Organised under the Swachhata Se Swagat programme, the event combined messages of fitness, cleanliness, civic responsibility and mental wellness. It forms part of a broader series of activities being conducted across West Bengal in the lead-up to International Day of Yoga on June 21.

With its blend of running, yoga and meditation, ‘Daud Se Dhyan’ sought to capture the essence of yoga's philosophy — moving from action to awareness, and from physical movement to inner stillness.
