Union government issues advisory for healthier dietary habits

The Union Health Ministry has issued an advisory for display of boards in various workplaces such as lobbies, canteens, cafeterias, meeting rooms etc., to raise awareness on harmful consumption of hidden fats and excess sugar in various food items

The initiative is part of the government’s efforts towards making healthier choices at work places to keep a check on the rising trend of obesity in the country.  As per the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-5 (2019-21), overall, 24% of Indian women and 23% of Indian men are overweight or obese.

The general advisory is meant to be a behavioural nudge to make people aware about hidden fats and excess sugar in all food products and not specifically to any particular food product. The advisory mentions other health messages such as promoting healthy meals including fruits, vegetables and low-fat options. It also gives suggestions for opting for physical activity such as encouraging use of stairs, organising short exercise breaks and facilitating walking routes.

This initiative is part of the Ministry’s flagship initiatives under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD). Excessive consumption of oil and sugar are key contributors to rising rate of obesity, diabetes, hypertension and other lifestyle related diseases.

Recognizing the seriousness of the matter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his recent Mann Ki Baat address had emphasized the need for nationwide awareness and collective action to reduce obesity, particularly through lower edible oil consumption.

However, the Health Ministry advisory does not direct warning labels on food products sold by vendors, and has not been selective towards Indian snacks.
