‘Almost 80% of the patients around the world are using the traditional system of medicine to fight cancer’

“A recent survey has revealed that almost 80 per cent of the patients are using traditional systems of medicine to tackle Cancer along with conventional medicine,” said Dr Vitthal Huddar, Additional Professor, Kayachikitsa Department, All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA). He was speaking on the backdrop of World Cancer Day which fell on February 4, Tuesday.

“All patients of cancer are showing more inclination towards the traditional system of medicine, including Ayurveda. This is due to side effects and their impact on the quality of life in treatments based on conventional medicine systems,” said Dr Vitthal Huddar.

This is not a phenomenon restricted to India either and the trend is visible the world over.

“People of other countries are relying on the traditional system of medicine available there. They are turning towards traditional medicine systems in their quest to live life in the best way possible during treatment and after it,” said Dr Vitthal Huddar.

Mostly, patients who approach traditional systems of medicine are the ones who are facing various side effects from their ongoing conventional treatment including vomiting, headache, loose motion, weight reduction, dryness of the skin, and absence of hunger.

“Patients also approach it to enhance their life span and quality of life. Then some patients approach it to prevent a second coming after having successfully warded off cancer through conventional treatment. Then some people approach traditional medicine seeking ways to prevent cancer after a family member is diagnosed with it,” said Dr Vitthal Huddar.

Some patients are unable to go through the rigours of conventional treatment due to their age or other health reasons. These patients want to carry out their cancer treatment solely through Ayurveda.

“While there have been instances of cancer getting completely cured solely through Ayurvedic treatment, we cannot generalise this until research publications regarding this get published on a high level and there are large enough number of cases where Ayurveda cures cancer by itself,” said Dr Vitthal Huddar.

For now, traditional systems of medicine offer various contributions alongside conventional treatment during the different stages of cancer. “Presently our research is primarily focused on combining the best of both streams of medicine to provide the patient with the best treatment possible,” said Dr Vitthal Huddar.
