Eat as a family, ensure pets are fed before having your meal: Expert

Ayurvedic dietary guidelines emphasize the importance of feeding others first and the value of eating as a family, points out renowned Ayurveda expert, Dr. V.L. Shyam in a recent article.

Ayurveda incorporates empathy and ethics while laying the principles of dietetics. According to Ayurveda, you will eat better after having satisfied the diet requirements of children, dependents, and pets. Also, eating in the company of near and dear ones goes a long way in improving your overall health.

Also, respect the food you eat, do not abuse it. Foods contaminated with grass, hairs, etc; re-heated dishes, foods that consist more of vegetables and undesirable grains (for example millets), foods that are very hot and very salty should be rejected.

Foods that are heavy, oily, sweet, or lotus-based should be eaten at the beginning, while sour and salty foods are more suitable for the middle of the meal. Bitter, spicy, and astringent tastes are recommended toward the end.

After-meal drinks also hold significance in Ayurveda. Meals containing barley, wheat, curds, yogurt, and honey are ideally followed by cold water, while warm water is suggested after starchy foods, fermented gruels, vegetable-based dishes, moong dal, and legumes.
