PM Modi Leads Yoga Day in Kolkata, Champions Yoga as Key to Healthy Ageing

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the national observance of the 12th International Day of Yoga at Red Road in Kolkata on June 21, joining thousands of participants in the Common Yoga Protocol session.

Extending greetings on the occasion, Modi said Yoga Day, observed on June 21, has evolved into one of the world's largest collective celebrations of health and well-being. He noted that yoga had united people across India and the globe in a shared commitment to wellness and harmony.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister highlighted West Bengal’s rich spiritual heritage, recalling the contributions of Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo and Lahiri Mahasaya to India’s yogic and spiritual traditions. He said yoga transcends physical exercise and serves as a source of vitality, awareness and inner growth throughout life.

Referring to this year’s theme, ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing,’ Modi said yoga helps individuals remain healthy, active and resilient as they age. He stressed that healthy ageing is about preserving and enhancing human potential, with yoga promoting flexibility, mental well-being and protection against lifestyle-related diseases.

Quoting the Bhagavad Gita, the Prime Minister underscored the importance of balance in food, recreation, work and rest, describing it as the foundation of both yoga and a fulfilling life. He said yoga fosters self-awareness, inner peace and better decision-making, making it relevant not only for personal well-being but also for global harmony.

Modi urged people to integrate yoga into their daily lives rather than limiting it to an annual event. He highlighted the success of the ‘Yoga 365’ initiative, noting that more than three million people from 130 countries participated in its 100-day online yoga programme this year.

The Prime Minister also commended Kolkata residents for their efforts under the ‘Swachhta Se Swagat’ initiative, saying their commitment to cleanliness had become an inspiration for the nation.

Concluding his address, Modi said a healthy society forms the foundation of a strong and prosperous nation and invoked the prayer, ‘Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah, Sarve Santu Niramayah’ (May all be happy, may all be free from illness).

Meanwhile, thousands of mass yoga sessions were held globally, including events at the UN Headquarters in New York, Indian missions abroad, schools, community centres, parks, heritage sites and public venues.
