TN Steps Up Nipah Watch, Tracks Fever Clusters

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu has intensified its surveillance measures against the Nipah virus following concerns over possible cross-border transmission from neighbouring Kerala, where sporadic cases have been reported in recent years. Health authorities across the state have been directed to closely monitor fever clusters and strengthen disease surveillance systems to ensure early detection and rapid response.

According to health officials, special attention is being given to districts bordering Kerala, including Coimbatore, The Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Tenkasi, and Kanyakumari. Surveillance teams have been instructed to identify unusual fever outbreaks, severe respiratory illnesses, and cases of encephalitis-like symptoms, which are commonly associated with Nipah virus infection. Medical officers have also been asked to report any suspicious cases without delay.

The state health department has enhanced screening and monitoring activities in government hospitals and primary health centres. Health workers are conducting field visits and collecting information on fever cases to identify potential clusters. Laboratories have been placed on alert to facilitate timely testing and diagnosis if suspected cases emerge.

Officials have emphasized the importance of public awareness and community participation in preventing the spread of the virus. Residents have been advised to maintain personal hygiene, avoid consuming partially eaten fruits, and refrain from contact with sick animals, particularly bats, which are known carriers of the Nipah virus. People experiencing symptoms such as fever, headache, breathing difficulties, or altered mental status have been urged to seek medical attention immediately.

The Health Department has also reviewed preparedness measures in hospitals, including isolation facilities, availability of protective equipment, and infection-control protocols. Training programmes are being conducted for healthcare workers to ensure readiness in handling suspected Nipah cases safely and effectively.

Experts note that while no Nipah case has been reported in Tamil Nadu so far, heightened vigilance remains essential because of the state's proximity to affected regions. The government has assured the public that there is no cause for panic and that all necessary preventive measures are in place.

With fever clusters now under close observation, Tamil Nadu's proactive surveillance strategy aims to detect any potential threat at the earliest stage and prevent community transmission of the highly fatal viral disease.
