Nine Gems of Ayurveda for a healthy life: Gem No.4 - Nasal application of oil daily keeps you healthy

Breathing is vital to sustain life, obviously! However, breathing affects the human body and spirit in more ways than just bringing in the necessary oxygen for the organs to function. According to Ayurveda, every breath that we take in is the vehicle of ‘prana’ or the life force of the universe. A cleansing breath is the foundation of a healthy life.

The human nose has a major role in ensuring a clean breath. The passages from the nose lead directly to the brain and the consciousness. So, it is important to clean and nourish the nasal pathways through herbal oil application. The process is called Nasya.

The oil used in Nasya is infused with Ayurvedic herbs to balance the doshas, improve the flow of prana, and alleviate a number of mental and physical health ailments. Practicing Nasya daily improves the function of sense organs and prevents diseases of eyes, ears, nose and throat.

To practice Nasya first the person should sanitize the hands. Then dip the little finger in the oil. Usually the oil used is coconut oil. Sesame oil, Anu taila or ghee can also be used for daily Nasya. Smear the oil on both the nostrils gently. Do this in the mornings and evenings.

The type of oil and herbs used for Nasya depends on the age and body nature of a person, and also the geographic location. Studies have also confirmed Nasya using herb-infused oils can act as a biological mask to prevent respiratory infections like Covid 19.
