Study links chronic fatigue, declining motivation to Vitamin B12, folate deficiency


According to a recent study by researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University, low levels of Vitamin B12 and folate may contribute to persistent tiredness, low motivation, and reduced quality of life. The researchers focused on homocysteine — a biomarker that rises when these vitamin deficiencies occur — and found significant associations between elevated homocysteine levels and fatigue-related symptoms.

The study analysed data from more than 600 healthy adults and observed that people with higher homocysteine levels generally had lower Vitamin B12 and folate concentrations. Men with elevated levels reported greater physical fatigue, while women showed reduced motivation scores. Researchers cautioned that the findings were exploratory and indicate a potentially important connection between nutrition and mental as well as physical energy.

Experts say the issue is especially relevant in India, where Vitamin B12 deficiency is increasingly being described as a “silent health crisis.” Symptoms often develop slowly and are mistaken for stress, burnout, or lack of sleep. Persistent fatigue, brain fog, tingling sensations, mood changes, poor concentration, and weakness are among the warning signs frequently associated with deficiency.

Health experts also warn that vegetarians, older adults, pregnant women, and people with digestive disorders or long-term acidity medication use are at higher risk because Vitamin B12 is primarily found in animal-based foods and absorption can decline with age or illness.

Researchers pointed out that fatigue should not always be dismissed as a lifestyle problem. They argue that nutritional deficiencies may be an overlooked factor affecting workplace productivity, emotional well-being, and overall health. Early diagnosis, routine blood tests, balanced diets, and medically supervised supplementation could help prevent long-term complications linked to Vitamin B12 and folate deficiency.

The findings come amid broader concerns about nutritional gaps in India. Recent health reports have highlighted rising deficiencies in Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, iron, and folate owing to poor dietary diversity, indoor lifestyles, and increasing dependence on processed foods. Public health experts say awareness and early screening are critical as many individuals continue to suffer silently without recognising the underlying cause of their exhaustion and low motivation.
