Kavya Jyothi award for Ayurveda doctor B.G. Gokulan

Renowned Netrachikitsa Specialist and brother of distinguished Ayurveda physician Dr G.G. Gangadharan, Dr B.G. Gokulan was presented with the Kavya Jyothi award, constituted by the Amma Malayalam language lovers collective. Dr. Gokulan received the award from famous lyricist Sreekumaran Thampi in a function held at a private venue in Kottayam on May 11.

Besides being the Chief Physician and CEO at Sudarshanam Netrachikitsalayam, Thiruvalla, Kerala, Dr. B.G. Gokulan has written over 300 songs and over 450 poems in Malayalam just during the previous three years, setting a new record in the process. An Ayurveda graduate from the prestigious Coimbatore Ayurveda College, Dr. Gokulan had in-house training under Gurus like Late Ashtavaidyan Vaidya Madhom Valiya Narayanan Namboodiri, Vaidyabhooshanam Raghavan Thirumulpad and late Netracharya N V Kuttikrishnan Nair.

Dr. Gokulan’s work focuses on preventing and treating common eye disorders such as macular degeneration keratoconus, myopia, and conjunctivitis using Ayurvedic methods that do not rely on expensive surgeries or high-tech diagnostics. He is addressing the gap in India’s healthcare system where modern treatments remain unaffordable and inaccessible to many, especially those in small towns and villages.

He uses this research to train both Ayurvedic and allopathic doctors, as well as paramedical practitioners, in the principles and techniques of Ayurvedic eye care. These initiatives help people understand and adopt preventive eye care practices rooted in traditional medicine, offering a low-cost and effective alternative to mainstream healthcare options. His life’s work reflects a deep commitment to making healthcare more inclusive, sustainable, and culturally rooted.

The award consists of a ₹10001 cash prize, a plaque, a certificate of merit, and a golden shawl. Former IG S. Gopinath presided over the function, which was attended by Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan MLA, Sabarimala Special Commissioner S. Jayakrishnan, and Amma Malayalam charitable trust chairperson Madhu Manimala.
