Swarnaprashana is the traditional Ayurvedic measure to improve immunity in children

Swarnaprashana (SP) is a physical and mental health care measure for newborns described in ancient Ayurvedic literature where a mixture of gold, herbs, ghee, and honey is administered to the children in the form of a thick liquid. It can be administered to newborns to children of 16 years of age. Gold is the main ingredient in swarnaprashana and it remains in the nanoparticle form in the suspension.

Research has proved that gold nanoparticles can help improve the immune system. They can boost the activity of immune cells and enhance the effectiveness of vaccines by making them work better to strengthen immunity. It increases body strength, complexion, longevity, intellect, memory and attentiveness, strengthens motor activity and increases appetite. It alleviates disorders caused by all three vitiated Doshas and is used in the management of poisoning.

Gold compounds significantly reduce cytokine levels, indicating their immune response. Gold nanoparticles also strongly influence the microglial activation status, which are the resident immune cells of the brain. It can stimulate natural killer cells and can induce cell-mediated responses.  To enhance vaccine effectiveness, the nanogold particles activate the T cells and help in the maturation of the dendritic cells which is considered the cardinal mechanism for vaccine adjuvant effects.

Presently, Swarnaprashana is included in the child healthcare program. In outpatient departments of some Ayurvedic hospitals, Swarnaprashana is administered to children as part of immunization measures. The Ministry of Ayush has launched a Swarnaprashana initiative in Odisha for its benefits in boosting immunity and cognitive function in children. The programme will benefit over 6,400 students across 15 government schools in two districts.
