Ayush industry expands beyond $18 billion mark, thanks to govt promotion through international collaboration

A report published by Forum on Indian Traditional Medicine (FITM) under Research and Information System (RIS) for Developing Countries - ‘Ayush Sector in India: Prospects and Challenges’ published in 2021 has estimated the Ayush industry size in 2020-21 at $18.1 billion.

This has been achieved by the Ministry of Ayush developing a central sector scheme for the Promotion of International Cooperation for AYUSH to promote and strengthen awareness and interest in AYUSH Systems of Medicine at an international level.

The Ministry of Ayush has functional academic AYUSH chairs in Bangladesh, Australia, Mauritius, Latvia, and Malaysia. The Chair aims to advance academic exchange, research, and public awareness of AYUSH, contributing to its recognition and acceptance in the host country.

The Ministry of Ayush has entered into country-level and institute-level agreements with various foreign countries to exchange experts and information. In this regard, the Ministry deputes experts in various trade fairs, conferences, bilateral/ multilateral meetings, and technical training. In return, these other countries send their experts to meetings/ events hosted in India.

The ministry provides incentives to Ayush drug manufacturers, entrepreneurs, Ayush institutions and hospitals etc. for international propagation of AYUSH. It supports international AYUSH market development and AYUSH promotion-related activities and boosts export through Quality Certifications to AYUSH products based on third-party evaluation in compliance with international standards.

In addition, the Ministry of Ayush has supported the establishment of 42 AYUSH Information Cells in 38 foreign nations and offers scholarships to foreign nationals for studying AYUSH courses in recognized AYUSH institutions in India under the International AYUSH Fellowship/Scholarship Program.

All this has resulted in the expansion of the market for AYUSH at an international level and boosted the demand for AYUSH products and services. The information was given by the Union Minister of State (I/C) for Ayush, Prataprao Jadhav in a written reply in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
