Ayurveda Day Gets a Fixed Date

In a landmark move, the Government of India has officially designated 23rd September as Ayurveda Day, ensuring a consistent annual celebration. This decision, announced via a Gazette Notification on 23rd March 2025, replaces the earlier practice of observing Ayurveda Day on Dhanteras, which followed a shifting lunar calendar.

Why the change?

Previously, Ayurveda Day coincided with Dhanteras, a festival that falls between 15th October and 12th November, making it difficult to plan national and global events. To resolve this, the Ministry of Ayush formed an expert panel, which recommended 23rd September—a date that aligns with the autumnal equinox, symbolizing balance in nature, a core principle of Ayurveda.

Ayurveda Day 2024: A global celebration

Last year’s Ayurveda Day, observed on 29th October 2024, was celebrated across 150+ countries under the theme “Ayurveda Innovations for Global Health”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated projects worth ₹12,850 crore, including expansions at the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) and four Ayush Centres of Excellence.

Impact on the Ayurveda industry

This fixed date strengthens Ayurveda’s global presence, making it easier for practitioners, researchers, and institutions to organize awareness campaigns, conferences, and wellness programs. The Ministry of Ayush encourages health professionals, academic bodies, and international partners to embrace this change and actively participate in Ayurveda Day celebrations each year.

With this shift, Ayurveda continues to evolve while staying rooted in its timeless wisdom.
