The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Ayush, has received the certificate of patent for the Ayush-D drug, an antidiabetic formulation for Type II Diabetes Mellitus. 

The multi-centric study was launched in 2017. The patent has been accorded for a period of 20 years for the invention entitled "A process for the preparation of an Ayurvedic herbal formulation for the management of diabetes."

The drug has been scientifically developed by embracing the latest guidelines such as Good Clinical Practices Guidelines for ASU drugs (GCP-ASU), National Ethical Guidelines for Bio-Medical Research (ICMR), and the AYUSH and WHO guidelines for traditional medicines, while taking leads from Ayurvedic literature. 

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic illness that has major long-term implications for individuals suffering from the disease as well as the healthcare system as a whole. The goal of the Ayush-D drug in the treatment of type 2 diabetes focuses on bringing the hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) value into a therapeutic range. 

The integration of the Ayush-D drug in diabetes management may be helpful to prevent, reverse, and better control the glycemic burden and its sequala beyond mere symptom management to comprehensive metabolism correction.

A patent protects inventions that involve an inventive step and are industrially applicable. A patent may protect a product, a process, or an industrial application. Patent Certificates offer protection for 20 years. Granting a patent to a product means it is ready for mass production for consumers.
