Plans afoot to include Ayurveda in curriculum in schools, colleges

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and University Grants Commission (UGC) are working on course modules for schools and colleges to help the younger generation imbibe the principles of holistic health, according to Union Minister of State for Ayush (Independent Charge) and Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav.

He said states such as Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh have already integrated the Indian knowledge system in school education. He discouraged competition among systems of medicine and emphasised the importance of integrating modern medicine and the traditional for holistic healing.  Allopathy and Ayush are complementary and their strengths should be tapped to offer comprehensive healthcare solutions.

He said the Ayush Ministry was focusing on evidence-based research to build global credibility for Ayurveda and quality clinical trials were being done by Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) and other institutions. He said efforts were on to set global standards for Ayurvedic treatments in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO).
