Mauritius to scale up Ayurveda services

Mauritius, one of the favourite tourist destinations of the Indians, is expanding its ayurvedic infrastructure facilities given the increasing demand for treatment.

India may benefit much from this development as both countries have shared cultural values and friendly political relations. India is the largest trading partner of the country, and the association extends to defence agreements as well.

Ayurvedic medicine has been integrated into the public health system of Mauritius since 1998, while Homeopathic and Chinese medicine remain in private practice. The entire AYUSH framework is recognized and accepted in Mauritius.

Ayurvedic services under the Ministry of Health and Wellness were re-launched in 2004 on a pilot basis at Belvedere and L’Escalier Mediclinics. Due to increasing demand, additional clinics were established at SSRN Hospital (2008), Victoria Hospital (2009), Flacq La Source (2010), Heyderkhan Mediclinic (2017), and Grand Bois Mediclinic (2024). Currently, seven Ayurvedic clinics provide services across Mauritius.

Some of the top ayurvedic resorts in Mauritius include Ayuryoga International Mauritius, Vidim Ayurveda, Ayuryoga International Grand Baie.

On average, around 70 patients are treated daily, resulting in over 4,000 monthly attendances and about 50,000 annual patient visits. Annually, 78,000–80,000 cases are treated across the clinics. The consistent growth in patient load and infrastructure has prompted the country to go for a dedicated ayurvedic hospital

The country held three international ayurveda conferences in collaboration with the Indian government in 1990, 2011 and 2016. It signed an MoU with the Indian Government in 2015 (renewed for three years), focusing on research and development of Indian traditional medicine. Mauritius established an ayurvedic committee in 2014 to oversee the importation and regulation of Ayurvedic medicines and herbal products. It has also been decided to observe Ayurveda Day and Yoga Day annually to promote holistic wellness and public awareness.
