Ayurveda can help India fight the diabetes crisis

Diabetes is one of the most vital healthcare crises that India faces. The country already has over 10 crore confirmed or undiagnosed cases. Numbers are expected to double within the next 20 years, according to media reports.

In Ayurveda, diabetes is known as “Madhumeha,” where “Madhu” means sweet and “Meha” means urine. According to it, diabetes often stems from an abundance of kapha dosha which embodies characteristics like heaviness, slowness, coldness, and oiliness. While a sedentary lifestyle, stress, and a genetic predisposition play a part, food takes center stage, especially those that are sweet, heavy, and oily.

Having hot ginger tea along with meals promotes digestion. Incorporate spices like pepper, mustard seed, and ginger into the diet for better results. Common herbs like Neem and Tulsi enhance insulin regulation in the body. Bitter gourd, or bitter melon, is also recommended for its potential blood sugar-lowering effects.

The therapeutic process Virechana eliminates toxins from the liver and gallbladder, thus addressing abnormal glucose production. Therapies like Elakizhi or Patra Pinda Swedana massage can enhance the blood flow affected due to diabetes.

Abhyanga, with its calming effects, can help manage the impact of chronic stress on blood sugar. Exercise and yoga enhance insulin sensitivity, regulate blood sugar levels, promote mental balance, reduce stress, and positively influence hormonal regulation.

With Ayurveda, managing diabetes goes beyond symptom management and embraces the restoration of balance and vitality. It’s a nuanced conversation between the individual and their innate constitution. Consult a professional doctor before starting the treatment.
