Dr. L. Mahadevan, a winner of the National Dhanwantari Ayurveda Award 2023, has written 72 books on Ayurveda


The National Dhanwantari Awards 2023 were given on November 10, on the occasion of the 8th Ayurveda Day. Among the three distinguished Ayurvedic practitioners chosen for the award was Dr. L. Mahadevan, who hails from the Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu. 


Dr. L. Mahadevan is well known for his contribution to the field of Ayurveda. Mr. Mahadevan has been teaching Ayurveda for the past 25 years. He is running a Gurukulam where he is teaching students free of cost from all over India. Mr. Mahadevan has written 72 books in Ayurveda, including translations from Malayalam and Sanskrit texts to Tamil and English. 


“I am very happy that I got this award meritoriously,” said Mr. Mahadevan, “It is a very prestigious award, and it gives me motivation for the work I do. I have written 16,000 pages, trained 20,000 students, and treated 7 lakh cases.”


Dr. Mahadevan is running a 103-year-old Vaidyasala started by his grandfather and has 16 doctors working with him. He has been documenting the cases attended by him and working with modern doctors to make Ayurveda an evidence-based stream of medicine for the welfare of society. 


Vaidya Ramdas Avhad, from Maharashtra, a disciple of Nana Joshi, who has been practicing Ayurveda for the past 20 years; and Vaidya Pachabhai Damaniya, an eminent practitioner hailing from Una, Gujarat, were the other winners of National Dhanwantari Ayurveda Award 2023. The award comes with a citation and a Rs 5,00,000 cash award.
