Nine Gems of Ayurveda for a healthy life: Gem No.2 - Delay your ageing by daily massage


The human body is like a machine. Like all machines, it too needs its periodical services and tune-ups. But unlike machines, the human body senses and responds to gentleness in approach, and a well-meant massage of the body by self or by another person can rejuvenate not just the body, but also the mind and emotions of a person. 


If carried out properly at proper times, daily massages can revitalize the body, delay ageing, and remove tiredness. It can prevent vata disorders (musculoskeletal and neurological disorders), improve vision, and nourish the whole body. This improves the quality of sleep and also enhances the skin's health, making it soft and lustrous. Daily massage also provides strength to the body by removing stress and provides a pleasing effect on the mind, thus enhancing the longevity of life. 


To ensure peak conditioning of the human body, Ayurveda advises daily massage for 15-20 minutes with oil, preferably coconut oil, sesame oil, or mustard oil. This massage or Abhyanga should be done especially on the head, ears and feet daily for the following results:


  • A good head massage using warm oil prevents headaches and other diseases of the head region. It prevents hair fall by strengthening the hair and also the premature greying of the hair. Head massages also provide lustre to the face skin 


  • Ear massages are carried out by instilling 2-3 drops of oil into the ears. Ear massages prevent ear disorders like reduced hearing, deafness and tinnitus. It also prevents the stiffness of the neck and the jaw region 


  • Foot massages are also highly recommended to ensure physical and mental well-being. Foot massage removes dryness, stiffness and numbness of feet. It provides strength and stability to feet and prevents vata disorders like pain in lower limbs


So you see, it doesn’t take much to retain your youthful exuberance as the years pass by. A few minor tweaks into your daily routine and finding some time to gently massage your body is all it takes. Daily massages help you to always be positive, productive and energetic while carrying out your day-to-day tasks, both in the mind and in the body.
