The pivotal role of Codex Committee on
Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH) in conserving and promoting India’s vast
spice biodiversity was underscored by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at
the 8th Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH) Session in
    Guwahati on October 13.

    In his inaugural address, Acharya
reaffirmed India’s leading role in shaping global food standards and trade
    practices.

    He commended India’s proactive initiatives
such as the promotion of turmeric as a superfood, and the approval of over 200
spices for export, reflecting the country’s growing strength in the global
    spice sector.

Highlighting the potential of Assam and the
North-Eastern region as emerging spice hubs, the Governor said that enhanced
processing facilities, value addition, and export promotion measures were significantly
improving farmers’ income and contributing to the region’s social and economic
    development.

    Delivering the special address, Rajit
Punhani, CEO, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), underlined
the economic and cultural significance of spices, noting that the global spice
industry, valued at USD 28.5 billion in 2024, is projected to reach USD 41.9
    billion by 2033.

Around 140 delegates from 40 nations participated
in the session hosted by the Government of India, with the Spices Board of
India serving as the Secretariat under the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC)
    — a joint intergovernmental body of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
and the World Health Organization (WHO) that promotes food safety, quality, and
    fair practices in international trade.

  • TRY THESE HOME-MADE IMMUNITY BOOSTERS

The Coronavirus remains a major threat
to humanity due to its mutating nature, resulting in the emergence of new
infective forms. Many of those who had undergone hospitalized treatment for
COVID-19 are also said to be becoming more susceptible to other infections like
Mucormycosis. There is also a warning in the air that a ‘Third Wave’ of
COVID-19 may sweep the Indian subcontinent during the coming winter.

What do we as individuals do about
all this? Do we wait for some strain of the dreaded Covid-19 strike us or
should we how best we can shield ourselves against this and several other
diseases? As the saying goes, prevention is better than remedy. So here are a
few things that can be done at our homes without much hassle to keep the entire
    family healthy and battle ready.

    Goose Berry-Turmeric-Honey Mix

Gooseberry is very rich in Vitamin
C and anti-oxidants which can be very helpful in maintaining good immunity. The
anti-oxidants can reduce the ‘oxidative stress’ in the body. Studies have found
that gooseberry fruits can enhance the development of antibodies and the
immune-regulatory functions of the White Blood Cells.

It is good to have a single
Gooseberry fruit every day, but it can also be made into juice and taken in an empty
stomach every morning. Better still if you add a pinch of turmeric powder.
Honey can be used to adjust the taste of the juicy mixture.

    Giloy-Turmeric-Honey Mix

    Giloy (Gulancha in Hindi, Guduchi
or Amritavalli in Sanskrit, Seenthal in Tamil and Chittamruth in Malayalam) is
said to be very effective in preventing many diseases. The plant is very
popular in traditional medicine. It has a climbing stem with heart-shaped
    leaves.

The fresh stem of the plant can be
cut into pieces and boiled in about 3 glasses of water in an earthen vessel.
This must be left to cool overnight. Next morning, the stem parts can be
squeezed and discarded, leaving the decoction, which can be taken with honey,
to adjust the taste. A pinch of turmeric powder can also be added.

    Vishnukranthi-Aswagandha-Mix

Vishnukranthi (Evolvulus alsinoides), whose flower is
revered as one among the ‘ten sacred flowers’ (Dasapushpam), is also is known
to possess some power to boost immunity. The plant as a whole, including
leaves, stem and root can be used. About 30 grams of is to be boiled in about 3
glasses of water in an earthen vessel. This must be kept overnight. In the morning,
one glass of the potion with two pinches of root-powder of Aswagandha (Withania
    somnifera
) can be taken. This can be consumed every morning on an empty
    stomach.

    Drumstick Leaf-Lime- Honey-Mix

Drumstick leaves are a rich source
of minerals like iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc and
vitamins like A, C, B-1, B-2 etc. It can also be used as an immunity booster if
taken in juice-form. For this, half a cup of drumstick leaves can be ground
with one cup of water which can be filtered and used with 30 ml of lime juice
and honey, to adjust the taste. Taking this mixture regularly can help to
eliminate toxins, and reduce the effect of free-radicals. In this way, it can
prevent cancer and enhance sex drive in men. It is also a neuro-tonic.

    Ginger-Coriander-Sugar Candy-Mix

Ginger is very popular as a
home-remedy for problems related to digestion. However, recent research has
proved its efficiency as natural agent that can function as an immunity-booster
that is even capable of preventing fevers caused by viruses like H1N1. In
traditional medicine, ginger is boiled with a few seeds of coriander in water.
This can also function as an anti-oxidant. If a little sugar candy also is
added, it can enhance immunity. The anti-bacterial effects of ginger is well
proven and some compounds in it can resist respiratory diseases as well.

    Aloe Vera-Giloy-Aswagandha-Mix

Aloe vera is very popular nowadays
as an immunity-booster and it can even help the body to re-attain the immunity
lost due to prolonged usage of steroids, antibiotics or pain-killers. An ounce
each of Aloe vera and Giloy extracts should be mixed and taken with 5g of
    Aswagandha root powder.

    However, this treatment should be
continued for a very long time to get the desired effect. It should be noted
that Aloe vera extract need to be ‘purified’ before usage which can be achieved
by heating the fleshy leaves upon cinders and then squeezing out the extract
which can be filtered using a cloth.

    Kovai Fruit Juice

    Kovai Fruit with the scientific
name Coccinia grandis has become very popular nowadays as a natural
preventive food against diabetes. It is twining plant, the fruit of which is
used as vegetable as well as a medicinal fruit. The fruit is dried and powdered
and 10g is taken with hot water, twice daily, as a preventive measure against
diabetes. Daily usage of kovai fruit as a vegetable can enhance immunity and
rejuvenate the functioning of the brain, kidneys and other vital organs like
heart. It can clean the body from toxins and can be nourishing by inducing the
production of more Red Blood Cells. This can keep the body healthy.

  • Simple tips to boost immunity

People are focussing on immunity building like never before
as the world fights off one of its worst pandemics. Here are three everyday
lifestyle habits advised by the AYUSH Ministry to power your immune system and
stave off an infection or illness.

    Drink warm water
    throughout the day

Consuming warm water helps in easy digestion, enhanced blood
circulation, weight loss and eases nasal congestion among others.

It is advisable to have two glasses of water at the beginning
of the day. Hot water dilates blood vessels in the gut, there by aiding
digestion. It also removes ama (toxic
remains left undigested in the intestine).

Similarly, a cup of warm water also aids in enhancing the
blood circulation. The benefits range from improved blood pressure to decreased
risk of heart disease. Consuming water clears the intestines, prevents bloating
    and removes excess weight.

    Practice Yogasana

“Practice Yogasana, Pranayama and meditation for at least 30
minutes daily,” the ministry tweeted. The regular yoga practice appears to
correlate with increased well-being, including better sleep, better body
awareness, weight loss, and greater happiness. By improving mindfulness, it
simultaneously helps to boost confidence, compassion, gratitude, and mental
    happiness.

    Include spices in diet

    Include spices like Haldi
(Turmeric), Jeera (Cumin), Dhaniya (Coriander) and Lahsun (Garlic) in the diet. For
instance, herbal teas made of herbs and spices can aid in digestion, warm the
body, calm nerves, help weight loss and so on. Among the spices used in
preparation of Ayurvedic teas include cinnamon, clove, cumin seeds, black
    pepper, cardamom, fennel and nutmeg.

“Our immune system is our first line of defence against
outside invaders like bacteria, viruses and toxins. By following (these) simple
immunity enhancement and preventive measures…, we can help improve our overall
health,” the ministry said in its social media message.

  • Magical herbs to support cognitive health

Today there are various medicines flooding
the market with ‘Memory booster’ claims. But how much truth is there in these assertions?
In olden days, people used to rely on medicinal herbs to cure their medical
conditions. Renowned Dietitian Srishti Arora touches on a few such herbs,
used for improving the cognitive health, mentioned in Ayurveda texts.

    Jatamansi, also
    known as “tapaswani” in Ayurveda,
acts as a brain tonic and helps in improving memory and brain functions by
preventing cell damage due to its antioxidant property. Jata means hair and mansi refers
to human. The fibres-like short hairs of this herb are possessing rich
medicinal properties. Grind the herb in whole and mix it with one cup of milk.
Regular intake of the drink sharpens your mind. The natural drug is prescribed
for mental ailments like schizophrenia, epilepsy, stress, anxiety and
    depression and induces sleep.

    Bacopa monnieri or brahmi,
is mainly administered for Alzheimer’s disease, improving memory, anxiety and
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among other uses. It has also
been used to treat inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. Brahmi was chronicled in several ancient
Ayurvedic texts including the Caraka Samhita and the Susrata Samhita where
clear reference was made to its actions on the Central Nervous System (CNS).

Turmeric contains a polyphenol Curcumin which has got antioxidant,
anti-inflammatory and chemopreventive properties. Curcumin reduces oxidative
damage and improves cognitive functions related to the aging process.
Individual studies have found out that Curcumin results in no loss of cognition
in the treatment group and helps a person to improve his concentration and
    memory.

Black Pepper too has many medicinal properties because of the
presence of a chemical called Piperine which has a relaxation effect on the
cells of the body and the brain. It also helps overcome depression. That’s why
black pepper is a highly recommended spice in cooking.

Nutmeg, a commonly available Indian spice, has a calming
effect when consumed in smaller doses. It’s especially recommended in curing
insomnia. According to Ayurvedic experts, drinking a glass of warm milk after
adding a pinch of nutmeg before going to bed will be beneficial. It will induce
    sleep besides de-stressing the mind.

  • Get rid of those ugly Acnes!

    Acne
is a frustrating skin care issue, especially for women. This condition is referred
    as
    Mukhadooshika (which harms the
beauty of the face) in Ayurveda. Dr. Arya Krishna explains how Ayurveda is effective
    in treating the condition:-

    Acne
is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with
oil and dead skin cells. It often causes whiteheads, blackheads or pimples, and
usually appears on the face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders. Acne is
most common among teenagers, though it affects people of all ages.

    As
per Ayurveda, the most common reasons for developing Acne are

    •
Intake of fried and junk food

    •
    Poor sleep

    •
    Stress and anxiety

    •
    Hormonal imbalances

    •
    Overuse of cosmetic products

    Role
    of ‘Doshas’ in Acne formation

    Acne
is formed due to imbalance of the three Doshas:
    Vata, Pitta
    and Kapha, but mainly
due to the aggravation of the Pitta Dosha.
The vitiated Pitta is said to lead to
the vitiation of Rakta Dhathu (blood
tissue). Also, the vitiated Kapha Dosha
blocks the normal excretory function of the skin, thus preventing the release
of the waste materials inside the skin leading to symptoms like itching,
pustules and nodule formation. The vitiated Rakta
also stagnates waste materials in the skin and produces multiple eruptions,
redness, raised local temperature, thick bloody discharge formed from the boils
and abscess formation. Finally, the irritation, blackish discoloration and ugly
    scars are formed.

    In
    Susruta Samhita (Classical Ayurveda
    Textbook) Mukhadooshika comes under
    the topic Kshudra Rogas (minor
diseases). And Acharya Susruta mentions the role of Kapha Dosha in Mukhadooshika.

    When
Vata is the more vitiated Dosha, the formation of Acne is
associated with dryness and blackish discoloration. When Pitta is vitiated, Acne formation is associated with redness and
burning sensation. And when Kapha is
vitiated, development of pus will be seen.

    Treatment
    of Mukhadooshika

    The
Ayurvedic method of managing this condition involves purification of the blood
and the body by using herbs with astringent qualities. Also natural complexion
enhancers can be used to moisturize the skin along with herbs that balance the
    hormonal levels.

  • Yoga, Ayurveda medicines for jail inmates

The prisoners in Gujarat, a state in western India, will soon
be provided with Ayurvedic medicines and daily Yoga lessons to boost their
immunity in these times of Covid-19.

The Gujarat High Court suggested the measures to the state
government after a prisoner, out on temporary bail, expressed concern that he
would contract the disease inside the Sabarmati Jail.

“We suggest the addition of ‘Milk with turmeric powder’, as
prescribed by the AYUSH Ministry along with other Ayurvedic medicines …recommendations
and measures prescribed by the central government is forming part of this order,
let the same be considered for the purpose of boosting the immunity of jail inmates
along with regular Yoga, Pranayama, nasal application and other physical exercises..,”
a bench of Justice Sonia Gokani and Justice N V Anjaria said in its order on
    Monday.

Earlier, the state government informed the court that there
is currently no Covid-19 spread in prisons though some inmates are affected and
that it’s already providing herbal concoction Kadha and Vitamin ‘C’ to the prisoners.

The AYUSH ministry had issued self-care guidelines based on
Ayurvedic principles. One should take herbal decoction made from tulsi,
cinnamon, black pepper, dry ginger and raisin once or twice a day,
the advisory read. It also suggested the intake of Chyavanprash (diabetic patients should take sugar-free Chyavanprash) in the morning and Golden
Milk once or twice in a day (turmeric powder mixed hot milk).

The simple ayurvedic procedures recommended include
Nasal application and Oil Pulling therapy using sesame or coconut oil. If one
suffers from dry cough or sore throat, he or she should take steam inhalation
prepared with fresh mint leaves or caraway seeds. Similarly clove powder mixed
with natural sugar/honey can be taken two to three times a day in case of cough
    or throat irritation.

The general measures include drinking warm water
throughout the day, daily practice of Yogasana, Pranayama and Meditation for at
least 30 minutes and use of spices such as turmeric, cumin, coriander and
    garlic in cooking.

  • Turmeric, neem effective against Coronavirus: study

Ayurvedic herbal products such as turmeric and neem may be
useful as a therapeutic or prophylactic agent against Covid-19 as they restrict
the viral attachment to the host cells via inhibition of spike glycoprotein or its
cellular receptor, a new study has found.

The findings of the research by a team of scientists led
by Pro Shailendra Saxena, Head of the Centre for Advanced Research at the King
George’s Medical University, Lucknow, has been published in the Springer Nature Journal of viral diseases.

The study, conducted through the 3D structure-based drug
designing approach, primarily focussed on developing therapeutics targeting the
spike glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 and its host receptor ACE2 to find potential
attachment inhibitors for the treatment of Covid-19.

“..We studied the direct interaction between the herbal
products and the virus. The results proved that some of the known immunity
boosting products of Ayurveda like curcumin,
nimbin (neem), ashwagandha and black pepper can restrict the virus’ attachment to
the host cell receptor ACE2. This they do it by inhibition of spike
glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 or its cellular receptor, thus blocking entry of
virus into our body,” Saxena was quoted as saying.

As per the study results, curcumin
    (
the active ingredient of Curcuma longa plant) and nimbin are the best ranked drugs among the natural products showing
    the inhibitory effect.

    “..we’ve found curcumin,
nimbin, withaferin A, piperine, mangiferin, thebaine, berberine
    and andrographolide may effectively inhibit
    the interaction of  spike glycoprotein
with its receptor compared to other selected natural drugs. Also the
pharmacokinetics data illustrated that all selected natural products have
better pharmacological properties,” the authors said in the research paper.
