  • Ayurvedic medicated oils have a 100 billion-dollar future to look forward to, here’s how…

There is a growing interest in Ayurveda and its products worldwide. Within this, the growth of Ayurvedic medicated oils marketed as skincare and haircare solutions is particularly noteworthy.

Globally, the hair care product market is projected to generate revenue of USD 104.7 billion by 2028, with an annual growth rate (CAGR 2024–2028) of 7.71%. As of 2023, the market size of the Ayurveda industry itself has surged past $18.1 billion. With the Ayurvedic medicated oils marketed globally as cosmetics in the form of skin care products and hair care products, this positive trajectory is likely to increase further the demand and market revenue for Ayurvedic hair oils worldwide.

Medicated oils have a big place among Ayurveda products. ‘Sneha Kalpana’ is the pivotal pharmaceutical discipline in Ayurveda that deals with the production of medicated oils. It involves the precise infusion of oils or fats with botanical components through an intricate process termed Sneha Paka.

To offer a clearer understanding, the process can be subdivided into four distinct components. The first component, Kalka, involves medicinal herbs that are transformed into a paste. The second component, Sneha, integrates oil or fat as a core/base medium for therapeutic application. The third component, Drava, requires the addition of liquid media, either herbal decoctions, infusions, juices, milk, curd, gruel water, buttermilk, meat soup, or water. The fourth component, Gandha Dravya, involves the inclusion of fragrant substances.

The initial three components are generally present in most Sneha Kalpana formulations. They are combined in specific proportions (typically, 1:4:16) before being heated over mild-to-moderate heat until specific process completion characteristics are achieved. The resulting mixture is subsequently passed through a filter, and if the incorporation of Gandha Dravya (fragrant herbs) is recommended, it is added to filtered oil or fat thereafter. After a subsequent filtration, the formulation is ready for use and is stored in an airtight container.

The medicated oils made through this process are effective against many disease conditions including hair- and scalp-related issues like hair fall and greying of hair.

    However, challenges remain.

To consistently achieve the desired efficacy, it is crucial to optimize the process using authentic raw materials and standardize the final product as well. To date, there have been no systematic efforts to validate the pharmaceutical methodologies for its preparation or to establish its physicochemical analytical parameters. Moreover, official standards for these processes are conspicuously absent from recognized publications or compendia.

Further study and research are needed to consistently produce safe, effective, and standardized products to foster consumer trust and enhance Ayurveda medicine quality in the pharmaceutical industry. This could validate their production on a commercial scale tailoring to specific production needs, and enhance quality control through advanced analyses.

  • ‘Oil pulling’ with coconut oil ensures healthy gums and fresh breath all day long

Brushing your teeth is a necessary step in maintaining oral hygiene. However, that is not the only way to ensure healthy teeth and good breath. The Ayurvedic process of ‘oil pulling’ is just as effective, if not more, in preserving the strength and texture of your teeth and gum, and coconut oil is the most recommended oil for this process.

Traditional Ayurvedic medicine has used coconut oil as an antimicrobial for centuries to promote dental health through oil pulling. It can get rid of harmful bacteria in the mouth that causes tooth decay and bad breath. The process of oil pulling is simple – take 1 teaspoon of coconut oil, swish it around your mouth for 2-3 minutes, and then spit it out and rinse with warm water.

Coconut oil reduces the amount of harmful bacteria in the mouth. It is particularly effective at killing the oral bacteria Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), which is a leading cause of tooth decay. Coconut oil contains 92% saturated acids, approximately 50% of which is lauric acid, which has proven anti-inflammatory effects and antimicrobial effects.

Furthermore, coconut oil has a high saponification value. Alkalis in the saliva can react with the oil leading to saponification and the formation of a soap-like substance which can reduce the adhesion of plaque, which is the primary cause of gingival inflammation, thus ensuring gem protection.

Oil pulling every day, especially with coconut oil, will reduce bad breath, prevent the formation of cavities, reduce inflammation by improving gum health and also whiten teeth by removing stains. So, you can confidently go ahead and face the world with a fresh and healthy smile every day with oil pulling.

But that’s not all, regular oil pulling will bring about overall well-being in a person. According to Ayurveda, oil pulling can be used for the prevention and treatment of more than 30 different diseases, which vary from headaches, migraines, thrombosis, and eczema, to fatal diseases such as diabetes and asthma.

Economically also, oil pulling presents a viable alternative in developing countries and rural communities where access to oral care is minimal, and the use of toothbrushes, toothpaste, and mouthwash is still not accessible. Here, oil pulling can serve as an affordable option and improve oral health outcomes. Other than coconut oil, sesame oil is also recommended for oil pulling.

  • Nine Gems of Ayurveda for a healthy life: Gem No.4 – Nasal application of oil daily keeps you healthy

Breathing is vital to sustain life, obviously! However, breathing affects the human body and spirit in more ways than just bringing in the necessary oxygen for the organs to function. According to Ayurveda, every breath that we take in is the vehicle of ‘prana’ or the life force of the universe. A cleansing breath is the foundation of a healthy life.

The human nose has a major role in ensuring a clean breath. The passages from the nose lead directly to the brain and the consciousness. So, it is important to clean and nourish the nasal pathways through herbal oil application. The process is called Nasya.

The oil used in Nasya is infused with Ayurvedic herbs to balance the doshas, improve the flow of prana, and alleviate a number of mental and physical health ailments. Practicing Nasya daily improves the function of sense organs and prevents diseases of eyes, ears, nose and throat.

To practice Nasya first the person should sanitize the hands. Then dip the little finger in the oil. Usually the oil used is coconut oil. Sesame oil, Anu taila or ghee can also be used for daily Nasya. Smear the oil on both the nostrils gently. Do this in the mornings and evenings.

The type of oil and herbs used for Nasya depends on the age and body nature of a person, and also the geographic location. Studies have also confirmed Nasya using herb-infused oils can act as a biological mask to prevent respiratory infections like Covid 19.

But unlike machines, the human body senses and responds to gentleness in approach, and a well-meant massage of the body by self or by another person can rejuvenate not just the body, but also the mind and emotions of a person.

To ensure peak conditioning of the human body, Ayurveda advises daily massage for 15-20 minutes with oil, preferably coconut oil, sesame oil, or mustard oil. This massage or Abhyanga should be done especially on the head, ears and feet daily for the following results:

  • Ayurveda — a great stress buster

    Are you finding yourself frustrated,
angry or nervous frequently? It’s quite possible you are quietly been taken
over by ‘stress’ which will have serious repercussion on your physical and
    mental well-being if left untreated.

Take some time off, once in a while, from
your busy routine to de-stress your body and mind the natural way, using oils,
herbs or even just tender coconut water.

Unlike other sciences, Ayurveda – the five thousand plus year
old Indian system of medicine, defines the concept of well-being as “a balanced
existence of key constituents or elements of the body”.

    Ayurveda has different treatment
techniques for ensuring ideal functioning of the body, mind and soul but one
needs to inculcate a healthy regimen to start with. The modules suggested by
Ayurveda are simple ones which can also help in increasing the body immunity
    against various types of diseases.

For instance, the ancient treatment practice
advocates application of medicated oil to select parts of the body. In
Ayurveda, the oil massage is referred as ‘Abhyangam’ and is ideal for stress
    removal.

Stress can be defined as a feeling of emotional or physical
tension. While short term (acute) stress is normal and vanishes quickly, the
problem occurs when one is suffering from chronic stress, the one that persists
    for a long duration.

This feeling can be controlled or regulated through
Shirodhara –flow of liquid particularly to the forehead area—using either oil
or ‘Kashaya’ (decoction of herbs) or even tender coconut water. It has been found
very effective in reducing stress and improving peace, energy, thereby,
generating a positive feeling in a person.

Generally, Shirodhara with oils is done to cure headache or
disorders like sleep disturbances. Oils like Ksheerabala, Dhanwantharam, etc
are commonly used formulations for treatment under the method.

     Shirodhara is done on
forehead since this spot is known as the area of intuition. According to Yoga
concept, this is the seat of our inner vision. When dealt with multiplicity of
choices or confusion, there occurs clogging of thoughts. Since the seat of
vision, referred as ‘Ajna Chakra’ gets blocked due to stress, the energy here
is in the form of potential energy. When Dhara (flow of liquid) is done, it
converts the potential energy to kinetic energy. Any form of block in the body
is thus removed and so is the condition of stress.
