India Set to Unveil Landmark Survey Results on Traditional ‘Ayush’ Systems of Medicine

The much-anticipated release of India’s maiden comprehensive survey on ‘Ayush,’ the traditional system of medicine, is expected by the end of this year, according to recent reports. Commencing data collection in July last year, the survey has nearly completed its ambitious task, with a projected timeline of 4-5 months for the compilation and analysis of results.

Representing a significant milestone in India’s healthcare landscape, the survey aims to shed light on the awareness, prevalence, and reach of Ayush systems, as well as the financial expenditure incurred on Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy treatments. The pioneering initiative has been incorporated into the 79th round of the National Sample Survey by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

With the participation of approximately 3 lakh households in 12,000 rural and urban areas across the nation, this study stands as the first comprehensive investigation into the diverse facets of Ayush practices in India. The survey’s primary objectives are twofold: to gauge the level of public awareness and acceptance of Ayush systems and to assess the penetration of these age-old healing methods in different regions of the country.

The survey also endeavors to ascertain the financial burden and spending patterns of households opting for Ayush treatments, thus providing policymakers with crucial data to bolster the growth and accessibility of these traditional remedies.
