Karkidakam is a season of diseases and low immunity. Ayurveda prescribes a medicinal gruel called the Karkidaka Kanji to be had during this season to raise the body’s immunity and to lead a healthy life. The kits containing the ingredients and preparation method for this gruel are readily available in various stores during this season. Here, Dr. Parvathy, tells us about its significance and how it can be easily prepared at the comforts of one’s home.
Karkidaka Kanji is a medicinal rice porridge and is a traditional food item of Kerala that is had during the monsoon season or on the month of Karkidakam. During this season, the digestive fire of an individual is low and as a result the process of digestion will not be smooth. Having the Karkkidaka kanji helps to improve the digestive capacity of the body due to the nature of its ingredients. It also boosts the immunity of the individual. This medicinal gruel also act as an appetizer and an energizer.
How to prepare?
This a gruel that can be easily prepared in one’s own kitchen. Ancient scriptures do not suggest any strict guidelines about the recipe of Karkidaka kanji. Depending on the health condition of the individual, additional Ayurvedic ingredients like drumstick leaves, green-gram, boerhavia etc. can be added to the basic recipe given below.
- 100gm Njavara rice
- 25gm Fenugreek seeds
- 10gm Cress Seed (Ashali)
- 5gm Dried Ginger powder
- 5gm Crushed Pepper
- 5gm Jeera
- 5gm Turmeric powder
- 5gm Garlic
- 5gm Carom seeds
- ¼ cup Coconut milk
- Wash the rice and boil it in 1 litre water.
- Add fenugreek seeds and continue boiling.
- Once boiled, pour in the coconut milk, wait till it starts to boil again, and immediately take it from the flame.
- Add the rest of the spices, mix-well and keep it covered for a while.
- Serve hot.
